Dance through the Decades……
Surely our best show to date! We covered the changes in style of dance from the 1920s up to the current day in this fun packed, inspiring show.
Every decade was filled to the brim with snippets of dance reflecting on the styles at the time. We had 1920s gangsters intimidating dainty ‘ladies’ having tea, a tap number from ‘Singing in the Rain’ and plenty of Charleston girls. The 1930s introduced ‘Top Hat’ dancers, a beautiful solo to Judy Garland’s ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ and a contemporary number to Glen Miller’s ‘In the Mood.’
The 1940s was all about the war – little evacuee girls were seen off on a train, we had uniformed WRAF girls, a ragtime band and the little ones dreamed about when their prince may come! Rock ‘n’ roll dominated the 1950s and our dancers upped the energy level a few notches, launching themselves into the best numbers of the period – of course Elvis Presley had to feature!
The 1960s started with a fabulous high energy number, Lulu’s ‘Shout’ and included all those great 60’s sounds and moves – the twist, Austin Powers’ theme tune and some fab Beatles tunes. The decade was concluded by our Pre-Primary class interpreting ‘See you later Alligator’!
Who remembers the 1970s and all the diverse music in that decade? Our girls and boys covered it all, disco dancing to Abba, Queen and The Jackson 5. A beautiful lyrical number to Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ followed by ‘Boogie Wonderland’ concluded that decade. Our street classes started making an appearance in the 1980s with huge energy levels and slick high quality choreography. ‘Footloose’, ‘Flashdance’, ‘Lady in Red’, ‘Maniac’…..you name it, it was there!
‘Hit me Baby’ started off the 1990s, we had a fabulous lyrical dance to Guns ‘n’ Roses’s ‘November Rain’ by the senior girls, some really original street and a memorable contemporary dance to ‘When Doves Cry.’ The 90’s concluded with a brilliant 90’s mix arranged by Sarah and performed by the top third of the school all dressed in MC Hammer type gold trousers. Impressive stuff! And so to our final decades, the years since the millennium and we came right up to date with loads of street (including our excellent competition teams, Konnect and Konnect Minis), contemporary and modern dance. Our pointe class danced to Adele’s ‘Someone like you’ and we concluded the show with Basement Jaxx which turned into a whole school finale.
What an achievement. Our girls and boys did us proud. All thoroughly enjoyed their time at the Hawth and everyone is looking forward to our next show in 2020.
Our photos give an idea of what it was all about, showing off incredible newspaper style backdrops with headlines from each decade. We also have a Dance through the Decades showreel (take a look at our facebook page).
We keep on saying it but noone does it like Whiteside’s!
